Malini Gupta intended that The Fortune Teller be interacted with, providing each individual with a unique and personal experience. This physical encounter is key to understanding the work. First, the audience selects images and numbers—seemingly random choices that determine profound outcomes. By physically moving the object—pinching the underside of the flaps out horizontally and vertically—the hidden contents are exposed. The Fortune Teller serves a surprising and moving pedagogical purpose: it delivers statistics and observations about gender issues in Indian society that can only be discovered through active engagement. The innocuous cootie catcher is an ideal form for this purpose. Mere chance routes the user to their gender, and the outward presentation is profoundly different from what lies beneath.
