Read Me!

Julie Chen and Keri Miki-Lani Schroeder at Flying Fish Press constructed Bitter Chocolate in a Jacob’s ladder structure, with three registers that unfold like an accordion. The top and bottom registers depict images related to the production of and the artist’s personal relationship with chocolate. The center register alternates between images of cocoa beans and squares of text. There are four distinct presentations of the object, with images of world maps and other depictions of cocoa present. Facts, fictional narratives, and personal experiences present chocolate as both a story and a commodity.
